Last month, June 2011, the Financial Times launched a web app. Why is this so interesting ... ?

Well, aside from the fact that obviates the need for the FT to pay Apple 30% of all in-app subscriptions,TradeApps believes this is the first of many big players to launch a platform-independent app with enhanced functionality including offline browsing. Facebook's highly anticipated 'Project Spartan' is thought to be the social media giant's first foray into just such an app and is expected to appear very soon.

HTML5 enables the offline browsing by way of shortcuts to articles being automatically updated. Other advantages of such an app include not having to submit new update version to Apple for approval, and overall speed of development.

While optimised for the iPhone and iPad, it is also coming for Android and Blackberry devices. More information here.
